Lahore now has dozens of schools advertising "Cambridge curriculum" — from neighbourhood institutions on Ali Road to long-established names in DHA and Gulberg. The marketing looks similar everywhere. The actual quality varies enormously.
This guide is the conversation we wish every parent could have before signing an admission form. It covers what "Cambridge" really means, the questions you should be asking, the red flags to walk away from, and how to compare schools fairly when the brochures all sound the same.
First: what does "Cambridge" actually mean?
"Cambridge" in the context of schools refers to Cambridge Assessment International Education, a department of the University of Cambridge in the UK. They design curricula and exams used by over 10,000 schools across more than 160 countries.
The Cambridge Pathway runs from early years all the way through to A-Levels:
- Cambridge Primary (ages 5–11), assessed by the Primary Checkpoint exam.
- Cambridge Lower Secondary (ages 11–14), assessed by the Lower Secondary Checkpoint.
- Cambridge Upper Secondary — IGCSE or O-Level (ages 14–16).
- Cambridge Advanced — AS & A-Level (ages 16–18).
For a school to deliver any of these officially, it has to be a Cambridge Pathway Registered school — listed on the official Cambridge International directory.
Verify before you trust
Anyone can say they teach Cambridge. Only a registered school can enter your child for Cambridge exams.
Before you take any other claim seriously, do this:
- Go to the Cambridge International "Find a Cambridge School" directory online.
- Search the school's name and Lahore as the location.
- If it appears, the registration is real. If it doesn't, ask the school for their Cambridge centre number — every registered school has one.
If a school can't or won't share that number, treat any "Cambridge" claim on their brochure as marketing, not fact.
Many Lahore schools teach parts of the Cambridge curriculum without being registered. The children later have to be entered for exams as private candidates — possible, but more expensive and harder to support.
The questions every parent should ask on a campus tour
Schools are rehearsed on the marketing pitch. They're less rehearsed on specifics. Ask these directly:
About academics
- "How many students are in a typical primary classroom? Year 8? IGCSE?"
- "What were last year's Checkpoint and IGCSE results — can I see the grade distribution?"
- "What happens if my child struggles in a subject — what's the support process?"
- "Are teachers Cambridge-trained, and what's the average teacher tenure here?"
About teachers
- "What's your teacher turnover been like over the past two years?"
- "How are teachers recruited and reviewed?"
- "Can I meet the teacher who'd be teaching my child?"
About fees — the part most parents underestimate
- "What is the total annual cost — tuition, admission fee, security deposit, books, uniform, transport, exam fees, trips?"
- "How often have fees increased over the past three years?"
- "Are there sibling discounts or sibling priority for admission?"
About culture
- "What's your bullying policy — and a real example of how it's been handled?"
- "Can you put me in touch with two current parents I can speak to privately?"
- "What does a typical day look like for a child of my child's age?"
The answers don't have to be perfect — what you're looking for is specific, comfortable answers, not vague reassurances.
Red flags to walk away from
Some warning signs are universal. If you see these, take it seriously.
- They won't share results. Any school proud of its outcomes will show you the data. Reluctance usually means weak performance.
- The brochure overpromises. Foreign language programmes that have no language teachers on staff. Swimming pools that aren't actually open. Robotics labs that turn out to be one cupboard of kits. Always ask to see the facilities the brochure highlights.
- High teacher turnover. Children's progress depends on teacher continuity. If half the staff turned over last year, the brand is the building, not the education.
- Hidden fees. Schools that only disclose tuition upfront and surprise you with admission fees, security deposits, IT levies, exam fees and "annual development charges" later are signalling something about how they operate.
- Class sizes above 25 at primary level. Cambridge curricula are designed around discussion, application, and individual feedback. Above 25, that becomes very hard to deliver.
- Pressure to enrol immediately. "We only have one seat left" pressure tactics belong to car dealerships, not schools.

Once you've toured 2–3 schools, the brochures blur. Use a simple comparison sheet — for each school, score 1–5 on:
- Cambridge registration — verified or not?
- Class size — at your child's age group, today.
- Past results — Checkpoint or IGCSE grade distribution if available.
- Teacher quality — qualifications, tenure, your gut feel after meeting them.
- Total annual cost — tuition + every other fee, written down.
- Distance from home — be honest about the daily reality of the commute.
- Culture fit — did your child seem comfortable on the visit?
- Parent references — were two real current parents willing to talk to you?
The 80/20 of school choice
- Teacher quality matters more than facilities.
- Class size matters more than building size.
- Daily commute matters more than parents admit.
- The child's happiness on day one matters more than any brochure.
What about cost vs prestige?
The premium Cambridge schools in Lahore can charge Rs 60,000+ per month. The honest reality: a thoughtful, well-run Cambridge school at Rs 18,000–25,000 per month can deliver the same curriculum and often more individual attention than a famous-name school where teachers are stretched across 30+ children per class.
What you're paying for at the premium end is usually brand and networks, not necessarily a better day-to-day education for your child. Some families value that — that's a legitimate choice. But don't assume more expensive automatically equals better.
